Day Boats.
Contrary to what people think the narrow boat in the beginnig of the canal era didn't have any cabins, and even when the canals were nationalised many of these day boats were still in use.
These were the original boats that moved the cargoes from the mines to the wharfs, the boatmen lived on land, usually in a canal side cottage.
The boats that were used in the Dukes of Bridgewaters mines were narrower than these in the photo, not many people are interested in restoring this type of boat, so you can look for them in museums.

River Salwarpe from the A449 road bridge at Hawford. The canal runs along the bottom of the hill in the background. This photograph shows the river Salwarpe in flood. To lock down to the river at this point would be the best route to the River Severn.
