MONTGOMERY CANAL
From Frankton Junction 7 miles of the canal has been restored, a further 7 miles are available for boat at the Welshpool end of the canal, it is planned to restore the whole canal eventually. It's possible to launch trail boats at Welshpool the slipway is at the end of the town carpark.
The canal is very rural and pleasant walking the towpath is a delight passing through unspoilt countryside.
There used to be a hire company at Welshpool but it seems that it is now closed, if you are interested in the restored section an enquiry to the tourist information office would be the best place to begin, or IWA Branch Seretary on 01938552772.
The canal has been mainly restored by the Waterway recovery group if you are interested in you can get information from their website http:/www.waterway.demon.co.uk
The original canal went from Frankton to Newtown it was 35 miles long with 26 locks and mybe it will be again some day.
