PEAK FOREST CANAL
WHALEY BRIDGE, END OF NAVIGATION
The canal is 15 miles long with 16 locks, the canal can be considered in two parts, the first from Whaley Bridge to Marple, which includes the short arm to Bugsworth Junction. The second part from Marple to Dunkinfield at the junction with the Ashton, and Hudderersfield Narrow canals.
The photographs shows the rail/canal transhipment shed, from this point goods would be loaded onto rail and sent via the High Peak Railway to the Cromford canal. (Click here) for the Cromford canal.

CYCLIST ON THE MARPLE AQUEDUCT.
Benjamin Outram was the Engineer on this canal, jointly with Thomas Brown of Disley they designed and  built this fine stone aqueduct over the River Goyt at a height of over a hundred feet. To the right of the photo is the railway viaduct.
There are sixteen locks in this flight plus some fine stone warehouses, the locks climb up the side of the tree clad valley of the Goyt.
Many gongooslers up this flight for it is a favorite walk in the summer for visitors.
