The canal is reached by a tidal lock from the River Trent, this photo shows the basin behind the lock, West Stockwith Basin.
The building on the bank is the Waterside Inn. It serves food, the lunch I had there was very good, the beer was also o/k.
The canals original length was 46 miles, and at the present rate of restoration it will soon be that again.

CHESTERFIELD CANAL
CROMFORD CANAL
The Cromford Canal ran from Langley Mill where it joined the Nottingham and Erewash canals. The photo shows where they used to tranship goods from the bottom of the inclined plane used by the High Peak railway, this railway ran over the Pennines to the Peak Forest Canal at  Whaley Bridge. Both the canal and the railway are disused. Today they are used as a part of the Derbyshire cycle routes across the peak district. There is a trip boat on the canal and canoes are allowed to use it. It is a designated nature reserve.
At this Junction there is a small but very interesting museum on the High Peak Railway.
The canal was cut off from the main system when the Butterley Tunnel had a subsidence in 1889.
