This canal is 46 miles long with 45 locks, two of these locks are wide beam, locking up from the River Severn into the basin at Stourport. The locks are well spread out with a particular interesting set of three at the Bratch.
This canal was an important part of James Bridley's plan for the Grand Cross canal system which would link the rivers Mersey, Thames,Trent and Severn.
It runs from the River Severn at Stourport to the Trent and Mersey Canal at Great Haywood Junction near Stafford. The canal was opened in 1772.
The canal skirts the Black Country and is surprisingly rural for most of its length.
