IRLAM LOCKS
when the ship canal was built they had to widen the bed of the River Irwell, this meant that the Brindley's famous Barton Aqueduct had to be demollished, a great pity, but to replace it Sir E. Leader Williams built a most remarkable piece of engineering. This is called the Barton Swing Aqueduct, to the side of it the road also swings, a most remarkable sight and one that I feel sure Brindley would have loved to have seen. When the aqueduct is movinging it weighs 1600 tons.
