DISUSED CANALS OF THE SOUTH WEST
STOVER CANAL
The Stover Canal.
The act for this canal was passed in 1792, the engineer was a Mr Grey of Exeter, it was built entirely for the carrage of china clay from the mines of James Templar.
The canal ran from the coast near Teignmouth to Teignegrace, boats were hauled by men rather than horses, they also used sailing boats, it ran until the begining of the 20th cent. it was finally closed in 1944 when the company found they could transport the clay better by lorry, this of course was before motorised vehicles suffered the kind of taxes that road transport has to face today. As you will see from these photos taken in 2001, there is an attempt to reopen the canal, or at least resore it to water. The tow path has been improved in places, as you can see from one of these photos.

This is Teigngrace as at Sept. 2002. The glass on the sign is broken and it appears that the restoration has come to a stop.
If the bit that has been cleared is not maintained it will soon return to the jungle it was before. Just a small working party once a month could keep it in order and make tremendous difference to the appearance of the canal.
If the committee lose-out on this present round of canal euphoria it will never be restored.

DETAIL FROM THE SIGN BEHIND THE BROKEN GLASS. You will not be able to read it for long if the glass is not repaired. Silly covering it in glass unless it's toughened.
